Abstract: After reviewing the historical development of emotionality in Xinhua News Style, this study develops a set of indicators to measure the emotion in the news, and employ it to measure the first prize of Chinese News Awardfrom 1993 to 2018. This study finds three characters about the emotions in newspaper news: (1) in the news articles, journalists directly express their judgment and appreciation, instead of depict the news actors’ affect; (2) journalists tend to express collective rather than individual emotion; and (3) almost all of emotions are positive, not negative. Furthermore, after reviewing the study on Pulitzer Prize, this study believes there are both similarities and differencesbetween emotions in the news in the Chinese and American journalism, which representas well as strengthen the media institution in both countries.
